How to Set a Goal You Will Smash (And Feel Great Doing It)

If you think about the times in your life that you’ve absolutely smashed a goal, what do they have in common?

I’m willing to bet that they were all goal that you felt really excited about, really committed to and that you were passionate about.

The same goes for the goals you’ve in the past that just didn’t happen. Why did they fizzle out?

Was it because you didn’t really care about them? Maybe they were things other people wanted and you went along with (isn’t everyone really into triathlons right now? Cool. I’ll do one too.)

I’ve been there and I’m betting that you have too. We can learn a bit from hindsight, sure, but I also have 5 ways to ensure that the next goal you set is something you go out and accomplish, with motivation.

Don’t Just Pick A Goal At Random

Obvious right? Well as I’ve already said, it’s easy to do what everyone’s doing or pick the first thing that comes to mind. Instead of this, I encourage you to think about the things that you keep coming back to in your mind, and ask yourself “what would make the biggest difference to my life right now?”

The answer might comes from any of the 8 areas of life - Career, Money, Relationship, Fun and Recreation, Home Environment, Health, Personal Development or Friends and Family. It may span across a couple of them, but you will feel all the more committed to achieving YOUR goal when it has a big impact on YOUR life.

Why, why, why, why, why?

So now you have an idea in mind for something you’d like to achieve. But hold on a minute. Before you rush off to make a start. Instead, let’s get committed to that goal in a deeper way to really make it stick.

Why do you want to achieve that goal? Write down your answer and then repeat the question 4 more times. Your answers will become a bit deeper each time and connect with a deeper purpose. This exercise takes you from a general goal, to really owning why you want to achieve it.

“I want to be a life coach and help women find balance in their lives.”

Why?

“Because I don’t believe women have to do it all and they deserve to be set free from this.”

Why?

“Because when we let go of guilt and expectations, we can be true to ourselves.”

Why?

“Because that is true happiness and freedom and I want women to have that.”

Why?

“Because that’s what I was able to do after becoming ill and living on my own terms for the first time in my life. It set me free.”

Why?

“Because I finally took care of myself in a way that was right for me for the first time in my life.”

After doing that exercise, I feel more connected with my purpose as a coach, what I want to provide clients, how I want to market my services and more deeply committed to my own self care. Not bad considering I just asked myself one short question five times.

Visualise Your Goal

Another way of connecting more deeply to your goal is to get really clear on how it’ll look, sound, feel, smell and taste, if these are all appropriate. You can do this in any way that feels good to you. Close your ideas and start your day visualise yourself crossing the marathon finish line, feeling sore but triumphant. Picture yourself feeling confident on the beach, with the sun on your skin after eating intuitively and falling in love with your body.

Athletes visualise their races and events every day so don’t tell me this is just woo woo nonsense!

Just don’t forget to do the work so you actually get to experience these feelings for real.

Break It Down

So you’ve now got a super clear goal that you’re committed to and can really see yourself achieving. You’re fired up and it feels great.

Brilliant.

Before you rush off and try to accomplish the whole thing in a week, let’s break it down into as many steps as you can think of.

One thing I like to recommend to my clients is working it backwards. So if you know you want to launch a podcast in January, what do you need to accomplish each month in the meantime? How can you then break down those goals into each week? How much do you need to do each day in order to meet your weekly goals? And, of course, what smaller steps can you achieve each day?

When you break down the steps like this you get 2 benefits.

  1. You feel like you’re crushing it and ticking things off left, right and centre, rather than once in a blue moon,

  2. You know you’re on track to get to the bigger milestones.

When you see your progress, motivation naturally stays higher.

Get SMART

I’ve saved the most obvious one for last. You may ell have heard of SMART goals before. It means that your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed, so that you can;

S- Tell yourself exactly what you are aiming to do,

M- Know when you get there,

A- Is this something you are able to do with your current skills, energy, time constraints, environment etc?

R- Is this goal realistic to YOU?

T- Set a time for it so it doesn’t fizzle out and you get to have a little party for yourself when you get there.

You may realise that your goal isn’t for you as you work your way through any of these steps, and that’s brilliant. No, really. I honestly think it is.

When we realise that our goals aren’t working for us, then we give ourselves the chance (and maybe the permission) to set a better goal that will serve us better, so don’t feel bad if your goals need to change.

Any goals you set are for you, and although it’s easy to worry about others might think, you know yourself better than anyone else, and it’s really not for anyone else to stick their nose in.
